AMOR FRATERNAL

¿No será mucho?

¿Acaso no defraudó Judas a Jesús? Yo mismo ¿a cuántos he defraudado y cuántos me han desilucionado?

El amor es sufrido, es benigno; el amor no tiene envidia, el amor no es jactancioso, no se envanece;
no hace nada indebido, no busca lo suyo, no se irrita, no guarda rencor;
Porque en parte conocemos, y en parte profetizamos;

Fraternal Love

Carolina Alfaro

John 15: 12-14 (KJV)
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

1 John 4:21 (KJV)
21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

1 Peter  4:8 (KJV)
8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

1 Thessalonians 4:9 (KJV)
9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.

Impressive verse, right? Nobody can be Christian without fraternal love. I have some weeks visiting one Pentecostal church, where the pastor and his wife pastor woman too. They request to the attendees to look each other to the eyes and to declare aloud, “I love you brother”. I confess that when I born again in one no Pentecostal church, I never seen before something like that, at the very beginning I felt intimidate. Then with the “practice” twice or third time, I get used to hear “I love you brother” from unknown people.  Precisely that they don’t know me and to express me love it caught my attention in tremendous way. In that church exist the fraternal love.

Can we love somebody unknown?
Of course we can and I am an example of Christian love for the unknown. Despite coming from Evangelical family on behalf of my mother, I did not convert to Christ till the Lord used one North American missionary and one pastor born in Chile to catch me up with his Grace and to take me to the conviction that I need to be save by faith in Jesus. If both pastors had not felt the love for others who knows, maybe I won’t be a Christian nowadays.

Do you love to your brother indeed?
This is a question with hard answer. Fraternal love means love for your brothers in faith and for who are not. But Marc, there is every character at church…..; well, what about you? What kind of character you think you are or play? Nobody is perfect. Not even you. John 15:11-14 makes the statement very clear. We have to love to the brother till give the life for them. It won’t be so much? It is too much, most of all when we have to love the rest of the mankind when there are many people that can kill you if they could in very slow way, they will do it with great pleasure. But this is the requirement to do. “Nobody has more love than this” the Lord says and Also “ But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44)

What else Jesus demand us?
Attitude change. After to confirm that there is not great love that give the life for the friends, Jesus says that we are his friends if we do what he demands us to do.  What is he demand us? Among a lot of requirements, according 1 John 4;21 to love the brother and to the enemy. But Marc, barely I can love the brother that I know, How can God ask me to love to who want to kill me? This is the order and this implies to love people that you don’t know, a lot of them are enemies, beside, He demands us to be willing to give the life for them. Having said that: this kind of love requires not only feel but to be attentive to their needs, as much as spirituals as physical or materials. About this love it can give chair the missionaries. They abandon everything to serve to Jesus in isolated and dangerous places.

But, How to love without risk to be disappointed?
It is inevitable, we will be disappointed or we will disappoint someone else at any time. Perhaps, Judas did not disappoint to Jesus? What happened to Jesus, It can happen to us. Even so, we have to afford fraternal love (?????) You never thought that among all the people that you deal daily it won’t be anybody who disappoints you. We are human beings and as such, we still disappoint to others sometimes. When this happens, ideally is to look for calm the rage to get easy the peace. Otherwise we can fall in a rage spiral, angry, bitterness that can be capitalize by the darkest passions of our personality and to take us to endless enmity. That’s why the Bible claim us: : “44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44).
To carry out this, imply to feel fraternal love. Also: “6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. (1 Thessalonians 4:6) . So that, if somebody cause you any lack of respect, the right thing to do is to take the complain to God and wait. It will be good to take revenge or to react by your own? “31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” ( Ephesians 4: 31-32)

Fraternal Love characteristics.

Fraternal love is impartial. “19 Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. ( Deuteronomy 10:19).
Fraternal love is not selfish. “39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” ( Matthew 22:39).
Fraternal love is Christian discipleship test. “35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. (John 13:35)
Fraternal love has as a model Jesus Christ’s love. “12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.” (John 15:12).
Fraternal love must be sincere. “9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.” ( Romans 12:9).
Fraternal love must be abundant. “12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you”. ( 1 Thessalonians 3:12).
Fraternal love must be fervent. “22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently” ( 1 Peter 1:22).

While there is a variety of love as the spiritual ( constant, divine, selfless, inseparable, demanding, etc) and family ( matrimonial, maternal, paternal), fraternal love is the kind of love that is connected with friendship, human compassion; that require sensibility at the other pain presence and inclination to take care of the congregation.  “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Psalm 133: 1 (KJV).  To end, I conclude that fraternal love is the following quotation at the Bible.

1 Corinthians 13
King James Version (KJV)

13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
